Back in 1971, when the rest of the country was busy carpeting over their hardwood floors, Merle B. Smith was busy building one of the Midwest's biggest hardwood wholesale distributorships. Prior to founding his namesake business, Merle Smith worked directly for a hardwood mill. His love of the industry, his love of the product, prompted him to branch out on his own, and 40 years later, he's still going strong.
1971 was a risky time to open a hardwood wholesale distributorship. Hardwood flooring was different back then than it is today. It required a lot of work to maintain. Buffing and waxing soon gave way to one step processes and easier, more user friendly types of flooring. Very few people where opting for hardwood as their choice of flooring. Merle B. Smith, however, remained resolute, and continued to supply superior hardwood flooring to retailers, contractors and consumers.
With new technology in finishes and installation methods, hardwood has entered a renaissance, and is now the most sought-after floor covering in the industry.
