Oil-based polyurethane is the most widely used finish, especially residentially. It provides a smooth, water-resistant surface, is relatively quick drying (8 to 10 hours), and can come in a variety of sheens, from matte to high-gloss. Other common finishes available are water-born urethane, Swedish finishes and penetrating oil sealers.
