Pre-Finished Hardwood
Pre-finished hardwood flooring - the term is self-defining. Raw lumber is milled, sanded and finished in a factory, then boxed up and shipped out. You open the box, pull out a board and it's ready to go! As a rule of thumb, the factory finishes are tougher, thicker and more durable than what can be accommodated for an on-site installation, but you sacrifice the smooth hand and customization that is achieved by sanding the floor altogether.
For the do-it-yourselfer, a pre-finished floor is usually the way to go, because installation doesn't require the special skill that an unfinished floor does. Make sure to follow the manufacturers' instructions!
